If something is aromatic, it has a strong smell, and that smell is a good one — rich, not nasty. Cooks use it a lot: aromatic vegetables are the ones you fry first so the whole kitchen smells alive (onion, garlic, ginger, herbs). It is a warm, slightly careful word, more at home in recipes and garden writing than in the street. You would not call a rubbish bin aromatic. 'Smelly' can mean a bad smell; aromatic is the pleasant, full kind, not just a tiny hint.

From Old French aromatique, from Late Latin aromaticus, from Ancient Greek ἄρωμα 'spice, fragrant smell'.

組成From Greek árōma (a spice or sweet smell), then Late Latin aromaticus, then French aromatique, then English in the late Middle Ages.
