If something is aromatic, it has a strong smell, and that smell is a good one — rich, not nasty. Cooks use it a lot: aromatic vegetables are the ones you fry first so the whole kitchen smells alive (onion, garlic, ginger, herbs). It is a warm, slightly careful word, more at home in recipes and garden writing than in the street. You would not call a rubbish bin aromatic. 'Smelly' can mean a bad smell; aromatic is the pleasant, full kind, not just a tiny hint.
