An armada is a large group of ships or boats moving together, especially a war fleet. English took the word from Spanish, where armada means a navy or a fleet. The picture many people still have is the Spanish Armada — the great fleet Spain sent against England in the 1500s. Though actually, speakers now stretch it. You will hear an armada of fishing boats, an armada of trucks on the road, even an armada of cameras at a famous person's door. The feeling is “so many, and they come as a mass.” It is a little colourful: news writers like it more than science books do. A navy is a country's whole sea force; an armada is the big group you can point at. It looks a bit like army, and the two words really are old sisters from Latin for weapons — but an armada is not an army on land, and it is not anyone's arm.
