The people at the very top of an old-style society: families with land, money, titles, and power that often pass from parent to child. We use it for that whole class as a block — the aristocracy — not for one person. Though actually, the Greek pieces mean “rule by the best,” so the word can also name a system of government, not only the people. In everyday talk, though, people mostly mean the high-born class. They also stretch it: “the aristocracy of film” just means the most famous and powerful people there, with no titles at all.
