1. 1

This describes a person who often argues, or who likes arguing. It is a habit, not one fight. An argumentative friend will push back, pick at your words, and turn small talk into a debate. In everyday English it can sound a little : you are saying this person is hard to have a quiet conversation with. Teachers may use it for a student who always wants to disagree. Though actually, in old or legal writing it can just mean “to do with reasons and arguments,” with no bad feeling. That use is rare now. If you call a living person argumentative, most listeners will hear a complaint.
