1. 1

Archery is the sport — and the old skill — of shooting arrows from a bow. In school and in the Olympics it is a quiet, careful sport: you aim, you wait, you release. In history it was how armies fought from far away. The word names the activity, not the person (that person is an archer) and not a single shot. You will also hear it for the whole world around the sport: the club, the target, the way of standing. It is ordinary English, a little more formal than just “shooting a bow,” and it is the word sports pages use.
