    An archer is someone who shoots arrows from a bow. In the past that was often a soldier’s work; today it is usually a sport, a hobby, or a figure in a story — Robin Hood is the archer many English classes meet first. The word names the person, not the sport (that is ) and not the weapon. You can be an archer in a club, in a film, or in history, without being in the Olympics. It is a plain, old word; it is not slang and not especially formal. Though actually the letters arch- here are not the “chief” prefix you see in archbishop or . This one comes from the Latin word for a bow.

組成From Middle English archer, archere, from Old French archier, from Vulgar Latin *arcārius, from Latin arcus (“bow”). It took the place of native Old English sċytta.
