An arboretum is a place where trees are grown on purpose for study, teaching, or display — many kinds, often with names on small signs, and paths to walk. It is not a wild forest, and it is not a fruit farm. A botanical garden often has flowers, herbs, and trees together; an arboretum puts the weight on trees. Some city parks have a corner that is an arboretum. The word stays a bit special: you use it when you mean that kind of tree collection, not any green space. The plural is usually arboretums in everyday English; the older Latin-sounding arboreta also appears in formal writing.
