Approx. is how writers approximately — about, not exact but close. You will see it on signs, in notes, tables, recipes, and listings: approx. 20 minutes, approx. 3 km. It is a written shortcut. In careful it keeps the little dot (approx.). People do not usually say the letters out loud; they read it as approximately or about. Though actually, in a full sentence the complete word is often nicer. Save approx. for tight spaces — labels, brackets, and lists — where you need a number that is good enough, not perfect.
