In grammar, apposition is when two noun phrases sit next to each other and both point to the same person or thing, with no “and” or “or” between them. In “The defendant, a woman of thirty, denies kicking the policeman,” the phrases “the defendant” and “a woman of thirty” are in apposition: they are two ways of naming the same person. The second phrase usually adds extra information, and in writing it often has around it, like a quiet aside. You can take that second phrase out and the sentence still works. Teachers also talk about a tighter kind, with no : “my friend Mina” — here Mina tells you which friend. Apposition is a classroom word. In real life you use the pattern all the time without naming it. It is not a list (apples, oranges), and it is not a clause with who or which (the woman who is thirty).
組成From Middle English apposicioun, from Middle French apposition, from Latin appositiō, from appōnere (“to put near”): ad- + ponere. In grammar, the two phrases are placed next to each other.
