Appliqué is a way of cloth. You cut shapes from one piece of fabric and them onto a larger piece — a shirt, a bag, a quilt — so a flower, an animal, or a letter sits on top. The word also names those sewn-on pieces themselves. It is a and craft word, and it keeps a French look (the é). You also hear it as a verb: to appliqué a heart onto a jacket. Some people drop the accent and write applique. It is not a common everyday word unless you or talk about fashion.
