An appellation is a name or a title — what people call someone or something, often a rather careful or grand name, not a nickname shouted across a room. A writer may say a king was known by a certain appellation, meaning that was the title stuck to him. The word feels formal, even a little old-fashioned, in everyday talk; we usually just say name or title. Though actually, in the wine world it is alive and practical: an appellation is a protected name for wine from a particular place, with rules about how it may be made. On a label it tells you the valley or village, not only the grape. So the core idea is still “a name,” but one use of that name is legal and commercial. You will not sound natural if you ask a , “What is your appellation?”
