An apocryphal story is one that many people know and keep telling, but it is probably not true — or nobody can prove it. Teachers, journalists, and people who enjoy a good tale use it with a small warning in the voice: do not trust this all the way. It is a slightly adjective, not an everyday playground word. Though actually, it was first tied to the , those extra Bible books of “hidden” or unofficial standing. The “well-known but doubtful” meaning is later (from about 1590), and that is almost always the meaning you will meet outside a religion class. It does not, in ordinary talk, simply mean “secret.”
