Apathetically is how someone acts when they do not care and will not try to change things. They answer apathetically, shrug apathetically, vote apathetically — the adverb sits on the action, not on the person. It has the same formal feel as apathetic; in speech we more often say without caring or in a couldn’t-care-less way. Though actually, it describes the manner, not the reason. A tired person and a cold person can both speak apathetically, and the word alone does not tell you which.
