The Antipodes, with a capital A and usually the in front, is an old British way of naming Australia and New Zealand together. It comes from a picture of the world as a ball: if you stand in Britain, those countries are about as far away as you can go — as if their feet point the other way from yours. You will meet it in older writing, travel talk, and some news headlines. People do not use it much in everyday speech now, and it can sound a little grand, or as if those countries exist mainly as Britain’s far side. Though actually, antipodes with a small a can also mean any two places on opposite sides of the Earth — that is how the name started — but this entry is the Australia-and-New-Zealand name.
