Antipodean is a word, used mostly in British English, for people and things from Australia and New Zealand. You can say an Antipodean writer, Antipodean English, or an Antipodean winter (which is summer in Britain — that is the joke hiding in the word). It can name a person too: “He is an Antipodean.” It sounds a bit like old newspapers, a bit “from the other side of the world looking back.” Australians and New Zealanders may use it of themselves, sometimes with a smile; they may also just say Australian or Kiwi. It is usually written with a capital A in this place sense. Though actually, the older idea was anyone living on the opposite side of the Earth from you. In practice, from Britain, that came to mean Australia and New Zealand.
