Anti-globalization is a political belief, shared by different groups, that people should oppose globalization — big business and money moving freely across countries — because it can hurt workers and poorer countries and damage the earth. The word can name the movement or describe a view: “anti-globalization protesters.” It became especially visible in street protests from the late 1990s, often outside big trade meetings. Though actually the people under this label do not all want the same thing: some worry about jobs leaving, some about huge banks and trade bodies, some about cultures becoming the same, some about the climate. Some later preferred “alter-globalization”: change the world system, do not only block it. It is a news and politics word, and it is already an argument, not a calm science term.
