Anthropology is the scientific study of people: how we live in groups, the cultures we make, and, in some branches, how our bodies and our long past look. At university it often splits. Cultural or social anthropology looks at living people and meaning — food, family, belief, power. Biological or physical anthropology looks at bodies, evolution, and our nearest animal relatives. In some countries archaeology and language study sit under the same roof; in others they are separate. It sits next to history and sociology, but it often goes out into the field and stays with a community, or it looks far back at bones and tools. It is a university word. In everyday talk people use it loosely for “the study of cultures,” which is fair enough as a first picture, though actually the field is wider than that.
