The Antarctic is the very cold area around the South Pole — the bottom of the Earth. It includes the ice, the ocean around it, and the land of Antarctica. As an adjective, Antarctic means “of that far south”: Antarctic ice, Antarctic winter, Antarctic animals such as penguins. The name is built as “opposite the Arctic”: the Arctic is the far north, and the Antarctic is the far south. Though actually, they are not perfect mirror images. The Arctic is mostly frozen ocean with land around it; the Antarctic is a huge piece of land under ice, with ocean around it. People say the Antarctic for the region. It is a geography word, a little formal, but everyone who learns the map meets it.
組成anti- (opposite) + Arctic (the far north). English took it through French and Latin from Ancient Greek antarktikós, “opposite the Arctic”.
