This is not a word you say out loud. It is a written shortcut for anonymous, used when a writer, painter, or speaker is not named. You meet it in book lists, footnotes, and captions: a poem marked anon., a quote credited to anon. The full stop is the clue that this is an abbreviation, not a living word of its own. Read it as anonymous; write anon. when the page is tight or the style of the list wants the short form. Though actually, English also has a different word anon — no full stop — which is an old way to say “soon.” That one is not this one. If you see the dot, think “no name.” If you do not, you may be in an old play, not a bibliography.
