    The Annunciation is the Christian story, and the feast, of the moment when the angel Gabriel came to Mary and told her she would bear the baby Jesus. The Church marks it on 25 March — nine months before Christmas, which is the point: this is the telling, not the birth. Paintings called “the Annunciation” show that quiet meeting: the angel, and Mary listening. In this sense it behaves like a name, so it often takes a capital A. Catholic and Orthodox calendars keep the day; many other Christians know the story from the Bible even if they do not make a big feast of it. (There is a plain word annunciation meaning “an announcement,” but that is not this entry.)
