An anarchist is a person who believes that governments, and often the laws of the state, are not necessary — that people can run things together without them. It can also be an adjective: anarchist ideas, an anarchist group. Though actually in everyday talk people sometimes call any chaotic or violent an anarchist, even when that person has no such belief; that usage is loose and often unfair. In history and the word is more careful, and it does not by itself mean “criminal.”
