An Anabaptist is a Christian from a group that began in Europe about five hundred years ago. They said a person should be baptised only when they are old enough to choose the faith for themselves — so they baptised people again, even if those people had already been baptised as babies. The name was not a kind name at first: other people called them “again-baptisers.” Today the word still names churches that grew from that movement, such as the Mennonites, the Amish, and the Hutterites. You can also use it as an adjective: an Anabaptist church, Anabaptist ideas. It is a history and religion word; you will meet it in textbooks far more than in street talk. Though actually, Anabaptist is not just a longer way to say Baptist. Baptists also baptise people who believe, but Anabaptist names this older European movement and the life that grew from it.
