Baptism is a ceremony in the Christian faith that welcomes a person into the church, usually done by putting water on their head or putting their whole body under water. It is often done for babies, but some churches wait until a person is old enough to choose it themselves. People also use 'baptism by fire' for a person's first difficult experience doing something new, like starting a hard job with no training.
