    Amputation is the act of , or the fact that a limb has been cut off in that way. A doctor may say a patient needed an amputation. People also use it for the missing limb as a fact of someone’s life: an amputation below the knee, for example. It is a formal, medical, and heavy word. Newspapers sometimes say “budget amputation” when a government cuts a programme; though actually that is the same stretch as the verb — loud writing, not the core meaning. The old Latin noun was about pruning a tree; that sense is gone in English.
