An amoeba is a living thing made of only one cell. It is so small you need a microscope. It has no fixed shape: it pushes its body out in blobs and pulls the rest along, which is why the old Greek name means “change.” Some live in water or soil; a few can make people very sick if they get into food or drink. Though actually, an amoeba is not a bacterium and not a virus — it is its own kind of tiny creature (a ). American spelling is often ; amoeba is the usual British and scientific form. You meet the word in biology class and in talk about dirty water.
