Amidst means amid: in the middle of, or among. You can stand amidst a crowd, keep working amidst the noise, or find a quiet room amidst all the trouble. Though actually, amidst is the dressier, older-sounding twin. In everyday American English people usually say amid, or just among / in the middle of. Amidst still turns up in stories, speeches, and some British writing. The extra -st on the end does not add a new meaning; it just grew onto the word.

組成From amids + an extra -t that does not change the meaning, from amid + -s. By surface look, amid + -st. Amid is from Middle English amidde / amiddes / on midden, from Old English on middan (“in the middle”), from midd (“central”) — the same root as English mid.
