If a person is amiable, they are friendly and easy to like. An amiable person talks kindly, does not make you feel small, and is pleasant to be around. You can also call a mood, a smile, or a conversation amiable (an amiable chat), though it is most often used of people. The word is a little formal and a little old-fashioned — warmer than polite, softer than cheerful. Though actually, it is not the same as amicable: amicable is for a peaceful arrangement, especially after a disagreement (an amicable divorce, amicable talks). Amiable is about a person’s likeable manner, not about whether two sides stayed on good terms. It also does not mean the person is in love; that is a different, older cousin of the word.
組成From Middle English amyable, from Old French amiable, from Late Latin amicabilis, “friendly,” from Latin amicus, “friend,” from amo, “to love.” Later French amiable and Latin amabilis (“loveable”) coloured the meaning. It is a doublet of amicable.
