Ambit is the range or outer limit of someone's power, influence, or a law's reach — the circle inside which they may act. We say within the ambit of the court, outside the ambit of this job, within the ambit of the new rules. It is a formal, slightly British, slightly legal word. Ordinary conversation almost never needs it; people say scope, range, or what I am allowed to do. Though actually, the old Latin picture is a going-around, a circuit, the ground around a building — so the “limit” meaning grew from a real line you could walk. You will meet it in news about government, law, and institutions more than in stories about friends.
組成From Late Middle English, from Latin ambitus, from ambīre (“to go around”) + a noun ending. Ambīre is ambi- (“on both sides / around”) + eō / ire (“to go”). First a circuit or the area inside a line, later the range of authority.
