An altruist is a person who cares about other people and helps them, even though this brings no advantage to themselves. The word names the person, not the idea — the idea is . You will meet it in writing more than in chat. Though actually, calling someone an altruist is a strong claim. It does not just mean a nice or one kind afternoon. It suggests a pattern: this is how they are, again and again, with little thought of what they get back.
組成altruism + -ist (a person who follows that way). Same French line as altruism.
