An altarpiece is a painting or sculpture that stands at the back of an altar in a church — often large, sometimes made of several panels that open and close. You meet the word in art history and when talking about old churches, not in ordinary kitchen talk. It is simply the piece (the work of art) at the altar. Some famous European paintings began as altarpieces and later moved into museums.
