1. 1

The Alps are a long chain of high mountains across the middle of Europe. They run through France, Switzerland, Italy, Germany, and Austria; they also touch a few smaller countries next door. Many people go there to ski in winter and to walk in summer. It is a proper name: we say the Alps, with the, and we treat it as plural (the Alps are…, not is). In everyday English this is almost always the range, not a single hill.
