An all-rounder is a person with many different skills, not a specialist in only one thing. In everyday British English you can say it of a student, a colleague, a friend who can cook, fix a bike, and tell a good story. In cricket it has a tighter meaning: a player who is genuinely good at both batting and bowling, not just one. That cricket use is the one you will meet most in sports pages. The word feels British; Americans more often say an all-around player, or just that someone is good at many things. It is friendly and a little — you are praising breadth, not saying the person is average at everything.
