Albany is the capital city of New York State in the United States — not New York City, the huge famous one down on the coast. Albany sits inland, up the Hudson River, and it is where the state government works. The name is older than the American city. It came from Middle English Albany, from Medieval Latin , which once meant Scotland, from Scottish Alba, itself from an old Celtic word for the land (tied, probably, to “white,” perhaps the white cliffs of Britain). In 1398 Albany was also made a Scottish dukedom for younger sons of the king, and the title later became a British one. The New York city was named in that Scottish–British tradition. Deep in history the name is a of , the country — same old “white land” idea — but today they are completely different places, and nobody in Albany thinks they live in Europe.
