Albania is a small country in the southeast of Europe, on the Adriatic Sea, across from Italy. The capital is . About three million people live there. For much of the last century it had a very strict Communist government; that system ended in 1991, and the country has been opening to the rest of Europe since then. It asked to join the European Union in 2009. Older books often call it one of the poorest countries in Europe; that was a fair picture for a long time, though life there is not frozen in that one sentence. In English class the name is easy to mix with Albany, which is a city in the United States, not this country.
組成English borrowed Medieval Latin Albānia, from the Byzantine Greek place-name Álbanon plus Latin -ia, the ending you see on many country names (Australia, Tunisia). Another old Greek form is Albanía.
