Alaskan means “of Alaska” or “from Alaska,” the huge US state in the far northwest, next to Canada and separate from the rest of the country. That land is known for cold weather, ice and snow, and for oil and gas. As an adjective you get Alaskan winter, Alaskan oil, an Alaskan village. As a noun, an Alaskan is a person who lives there or comes from there. The word points to people and things that belong to the place; it is not the name of the place itself. You can say “Alaskan fishermen” or “She is Alaskan.” You cannot say “I went to Alaskan.”
