Alaska is the largest state in the United States. It sits far in the northwest, next to Canada, and it does not touch the other US states — you fly, take a boat, or go through Canada to get there. People picture ice, snow, long winter nights, wild animals, and a lot of empty land, and that picture is fair for much of it. It also has an important oil and gas industry, which is why the rest of the US talks about it in the news. Though actually, southern summers can be mild, and not every town is a frozen white sheet all year. Some treat Alaska as if it were its own country; it is not. It is a US state, just a long way from the others.
組成English took the name from Russian Аляска (Alyaska). That came from an Aleut word, alaxsxaq, meaning something like “the mainland” — the land the sea is directed toward (alag “about the sea” + endings that turn it into a place-name). A common folk story says it is Russian ala plus an ending like -sky; that is not the real origin.
