Airbus is the name of a European company that makes large passenger planes, and people also say 'an Airbus' for one of those planes, the way they say 'a Boeing'. The name was built from air + bus: the first idea was a plane like a bus in the sky, carrying many people on shorter trips. That was the tidy start. Today Airbus also makes planes for very long flights, so 'short distances' is only part of the story. It is a trade name with a capital A, not a general word for any big plane — a Boeing can do the same job. In news and at airports it is an everyday name; it is not slang.
