    Agony is extreme pain or suffering - so strong it can make a person cry out or feel like they can't bear it. It can be physical, like the agony of a broken bone, or emotional, like the agony of waiting for exam results, or watching someone you love suffer. It's a strong, dramatic word - don't use it for small, everyday discomfort, save it for real, intense suffering.

14th century, via Old French and Latin from Ancient Greek agōnia 'struggle', from agōn 'contest'; 'extreme pain' from c. 1600.
