"Aggravating" describes something that makes a bad situation worse, or something that builds up your frustration bit by bit. If your knee hurts and you keep running on it anyway, you're "aggravating the injury" — making it worse. If a small habit, like someone tapping their pen, keeps bothering you more and more, that's "aggravating" in the sense of irritating. Both senses are common in everyday English.
