In British English, afters is a , spoken word for the sweet dish you eat at the end of a meal — what many people call dessert, and what some British families call pudding. A child might ask, What's for afters? It feels like family talk or a café, not like a printed restaurant menu. Americans almost never say it. Though actually, even in Britain it can sound a bit old-fashioned or ; grown-ups in cities often just say dessert now. The -s on the end is a friendly extra, not a plural of after, and the word does not mean afterwards.
