Afro-Caribbean names a Black person who comes from the Caribbean, or whose family did — islands such as Jamaica, Trinidad, Barbados, and their neighbours — especially someone now living in Britain or the United States. You hear it most in British English, in news, schools, and official writing. In the US, people more often say Caribbean, West Indian, or the island name (Jamaican, ). The Afro- part points to Africa, because the Black population of the Caribbean was taken there from Africa as ; that history sits inside the word, not beside it. It can name a person (an Afro-Caribbean) or describe things (Afro-Caribbean food, Afro-Caribbean music). Though actually, a lot of people would rather tell you the island they belong to than this wide label, and “West Indian” is an older British word that some families still use and some do not like. Let people choose their own word.
