1. 1

Afforestation is the act of planting trees on land so that a forest can grow there — land that was not a forest already, or not in anyone’s living memory. Governments and scientists use the word in plans: to hold soil on bare hills, to bring birds and animals back, or to take in some of the gas that heats the world. It is a formal, almost official noun. You will see it in reports, not in a casual “let’s plant a few trees this Saturday.” Though actually, planting a row of trees beside a road is not yet afforestation. The point is to make a forest, or something close to one, and that takes years of waiting, not one afternoon. It is also not the same as reforestation, which is putting trees back where a forest used to stand and was cut or burned. Afforestation starts more from open or farmed land. The opposite idea you will meet on the same page is deforestation: cutting a forest away.
