If someone is affable, they are friendly and easy to talk to. They smile, they listen, they do not make you feel small. It is a slightly formal word, often used of hosts, older people, bosses, or public figures whose manner puts others at ease. An affable remembers your name; an affable official answers the awkward question without snapping. The word is about ease in talk, not about hugs or romance. A person can be affable with strangers and still be quite private. It is warmer than polite, but lighter than : you would not call a silent hug affable.

組成Borrowed from French affable, from Latin affābilis, from affor (to address), from ad (to) + for (to speak). On the surface it looks like af- + fable, and that is not a wild guess: fable is from the same speaking root.
