Afar means from a long way off. We almost always say it with from: we watched the fire from afar; she heard the music from afar. It paints a picture of distance — you can see or hear something, but you are not next to it. It is a little old-fashioned and a little literary; in plain talk people more often say from far away or in the distance. You will still meet it in stories, songs, and news writing that wants a slightly raised tone. It is the old prefix a- (here something like on or at) plus the ordinary word far.
