The Aeneid is a long poem by the Roman writer Virgil. It tells what happens to Aeneas after Troy falls: the sea, the stay in Carthage, a journey to the world of the dead, and the wars in Italy that, in the poem's telling, lead toward Rome. It was written in Latin in the first century BC, and for a very long time European students were made to read it the way some students now are made to read a national epic. People say the Aeneid the way they say the Odyssey: it is a title, one book, not a kind of poem. Though actually, the ending is bleaker than a simple hero founds a city summary. Aeneas wins, but the last thing you see is him killing a man who has already lost. In English the title is a proper name; you write it with a capital A.
