- 1
To adjudge is to make a formal judgment about someone or something: to decide, as a court or an official might, that a person is guilty, that a prize belongs to someone, or that a thing is so. It is a legal and rather old word. Judges and old reports use it; friends in a café do not. You are much more likely to hear judge, rule, or find (as in "the court found him guilty"). Though actually, adjudge often names the result in a tight pattern: they adjudged him the winner; he was adjudged bankrupt. It is not the everyday "I adjudge this cake to be good" — that is just think. The decision sits outside you; it is given, not merely felt.
