Adenoids are small, soft pieces of flesh at the top of your throat, behind your nose — where the nose meets the throat, higher up than the you can see when someone says “ah.” In young children they help catch ; they often shrink as you grow up. When they swell, a child may breathe through the mouth, snore, sleep badly, or speak with a blocked-nose voice. Parents and doctors use the word a lot; you do not need it until someone has that problem. Though actually, people mix them up with all the time. sit at the sides of the throat, at the back of the mouth, where you can see them. Adenoids hide up behind the nose, so you cannot see them in a mirror.

組成From adenoid: Greek aden, “gland,” plus -oid, “looking like” — gland-like tissue. The usual English form is the plural adenoids.
