Actuarial is the adjective for the number-work that sits behind insurance and pensions. An insurance company must guess how likely it is that people will crash a car, get sick, live a long time, or die, and then it sets the price of the policy. Though actually, in offices you will hear “She’s in actuarial,” meaning she works in that department — speakers use the adjective as a shorthand for the whole job. The word is formal and technical. You meet it in business, exams, and the news, not in ordinary chat about a weekend. It is about long-term risk and prices, not about keeping this year’s accounts.
