An acrobat is a person who entertains people by doing hard things with the body: walking on their hands, balancing on a thin rope high up, folding themselves in surprising ways, jumping and landing just so. The classic picture is the circus, under the big tent, but you also see acrobats in street shows, in the theatre, and in sports that borrow the same skills, such as floor work in gymnastics. The word is ordinary, not stuffy; children know it.
