This is the adverb from acrimonious: it tells you how people argued, split, or answered — with a lot of anger and , cutting words. If two sides 'parted acrimoniously', they did not shake hands and wish each other well; they left with sharp feelings. Like the adjective, it is a newspaper word, a little heavy for everyday speech. You will see it next to verbs like argue, debate, deny, divorce, split. Though actually, it does not mean 'very' or 'strongly'. A person can disagree strongly and still be calm and fair.
